The Khevenhüller-Metsch were an influential Austrian aristocratic family who held the right to strike coins — a privilege increasingly rare among Imperial counts by the mid-eighteenth century. This 1761 piece is catalogued as a pattern, meaning it was likely struck for presentation or approval rather than general release, which explains why surviving examples are exceptional rarities. Johann Joseph von Khevenhüller-Metsch served as Grand Master of the Court under Maria Theresa, a position of considerable proximity to power at precisely the moment this was struck.
