Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi held the archbishopric for an unusually long 26 years, and his thalers were struck across multiple die marriages throughout that span. Zöttl 617 sits within a well-documented sequence, but date placement and minor legend variants make attributing individual pieces a more involved exercise than the single catalog number suggests.
Khuen von Belasi was a staunch defender of Catholicism during the early decades of the Counter-Reformation, expelling Protestant citizens from Salzburg — a policy that would be echoed far more brutally by his successors a century later.
