Johann Christian and Georg Rudolf were the sons of Joachim Friedrich of Liegnitz-Brieg, who died in 1602, leaving the duchy under joint rule by his two heirs while both were still minors. Their mother, Anna Maria of Anhalt, served as regent during the early years of this co-rulership, a dynastic arrangement that made the Silesian duchy something of an anomaly among the fragmented principalities of the Holy Roman Empire in the years immediately preceding the Thirty Years' War.
Joint-rule coinage of this type was produced across a narrow window before Georg Rudolf eventually separated his holdings at Liegnitz from Johann Christian's tenure at Brieg in 1612.
