Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Johann Anton von Eggenberg, Duke of Krummau, facing right, depicted with a goatee and wearing elaborately decorated armour with a lace collar and chain of office. The portrait is rendered in a bold baroque style characteristic of mid-17th century Central European coinage. A circular legend surrounds the effigy reading IOAN·ANT·D·G·DUX·CRUMLOVII, identifying the issuer by name and title in abbreviated Latin.

Aanvullende informatie

Johann Anton von Eggenberg held Krummau (Český Krumlov) as an autonomous duchy within Bohemia, one of the few such grants made directly by the Habsburgs to a non-royal family. The right to strike thalers was itself a privilege jealously administered by Vienna, and the Eggenbergs secured it as part of the extraordinary favor shown to Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg — Johann Anton's father — for services rendered during the Thirty Years' War. These thalers were struck across a five-year window that coincided almost exactly with the final, exhausted phase of that conflict, ending with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

The duchy itself was extinguished with the male line in 1717.
