Jakob Ernst von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn served as Prince-Bishop of Olomouc from 1738 until his death in 1745, a tenure bracketed almost perfectly by the War of the Austrian Succession. His 1741 thaler was struck the same year Maria Theresa faced simultaneous Prussian invasion of Silesia and Bavarian incursion into Bohemia — a crisis that put every ecclesiastical mint in Moravia under pressure to demonstrate loyalty through coinage. The Bishopric of Olomouc, one of the wealthiest sees in central Europe, had the resources and the minting rights to do exactly that.
