Ferdinand I died in 1564, so thalers struck "in his name" nearly a decade later reflect a deliberate political choice by Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol, who continued issuing coins under his late father's titles to assert dynastic continuity over the county. The Hall mint — one of the most technically advanced facilities in the Habsburg world, fed by silver from the Schwaz mines — had the capacity and the dies to sustain such retrograde issues without interruption.
Davenport's EC I grouping separates these from earlier Ferdinand I lifetime issues primarily by die characteristics and stylistic drift in the portraiture workshop.
