György Rákóczi I consolidated Transylvania's position as the dominant Protestant principality in Central Europe, twice extracting concessions from the Habsburgs — most significantly at the Peace of Linz in 1645, which extended religious freedoms to Hungarian Protestants. This thaler was struck just two years after that treaty, at a high point of Rákóczi authority that would not outlast the decade.
Huszár E#506a distinguishes this as a specific emission within a broader 1647 output; variant designations in Transylvanian thalers of this period frequently reflect die combinations rather than separate issues, and the distinction matters for collectors working the Rákóczi series carefully.
