Montfort-Peggau was among the smallest and most obscure of the Austrian comital territories, and Hugh XIII's thalers of 1622 were struck during the convulsive opening years of the Thirty Years' War — a moment when minor imperial lords were scrambling to assert what coinage rights they still held before consolidation eroded them entirely. The Kipper und Wipperzeit, the currency debasement crisis that swept the Holy Roman Empire between roughly 1619 and 1623, provided both the chaos and the incentive: lesser rulers exploited the monetary disorder to mint heavily while they could.
Dav ST#7080 places this squarely in the Swabian thaler series. Few examples surface at auction.
