Henry the Younger of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel spent much of his reign in open confessional warfare with the Schmalkaldic League, which twice drove him from his lands — in 1542 and again after his capture at the Battle of Mühlberg's prelude in 1545, when he was held prisoner by the League until 1547. These thalers were struck almost immediately upon his restoration, making them a direct product of a reign interrupted by Protestant military force against one of the most stubbornly Catholic princes in northern Germany.
Welter 391 is known with minor die variations across the emission period, unsurprising given the span of years involved and the Brunswick mint's output during Henry's final decade before his death in 1568.
