The Auersperg family held the rank of Imperial Princes within the Holy Roman Empire, but this piece was struck under the county title, placing it among the final decades of the fragmented German territorial coinage system that the Reichsmünzordnung had repeatedly — and largely unsuccessfully — tried to standardize since 1559. By 1762, the Empire was deep into the Seven Years' War, and small territorial mints like this one continued striking thalers that circulated more on the strength of their silver content than any issuing authority's political weight. Heinrich von Auersperg's coinage is scarce in any grade; the county's minting activity was never prolific.
