Günther XLI and John Günther ruled Schwarzburg jointly under the partitioned inheritance arrangements common to German comital houses of the sixteenth century — co-rulership thalers of this kind required both parties' consent to mint, making the series politically sensitive and administratively cumbersome. Schwarzburg's silver supply was modest compared to the great Saxon mining counties, and production runs were correspondingly short.
The 1569–1571 window corresponds to the final years before John Günther's death in 1572, after which the county passed through further subdivision.
