Günther XLI and John Günther ruled Schwarzburg jointly under the partition arrangements common to German comital dynasties, where inheritance law routinely split territories among male heirs rather than consolidating them. This joint issue reflects a brief window of co-regency before the county's further subdivision. Schwarzburg thalers of this period are notably underrepresented in major collections — the county's output was modest, and circulation extended little beyond Thuringia.
Davenport's attribution to GT I#9829 places this among the earliest thaler-sized issues from the Schwarzburg line before the eventual elevation to princely rank in 1599.
