Obverse description Central field dominated by a large, elaborately quartered heraldic shield surmounted by a royal crown. The shield displays the multiple armorial bearings of the Brunswick-Lüneburg dynasty, incorporating lions, horses, and other dynastic charges arranged in multiple quarters. The shield is flanked by ornate baroque scrollwork and foliate mantling. The encircling legend reads GEORGE LUD D G D BR & L S R I EL with the date 1698 divided by floral ornaments, identifying the issuer as Georg Ludwig (later King George I of Great Britain), Elector of the Holy Roman Empire.
