Jägerndorf (modern Krnov, Czech Republic) passed to Brandenburg's Hohenzollern line in 1523, and George Frederick I — Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach — administered the duchy as a Protestant enclave within largely Catholic Silesia. These thalers were struck during the final years of his rule before his death in 1603, at a moment when Rudolf II's reassertion of Habsburg authority over Silesian Protestantism was beginning to create the fault lines that would crack open violently in 1618. After George Frederick died without legitimate issue, Jägerndorf eventually fell to Johann Georg of Brandenburg, whose support for the Bohemian revolt led to the duchy's confiscation by Ferdinand II in 1621 — ending independent coinage from the mint entirely.
