Beschrijving voorzijde Armored bust of Margrave George Frederick facing right, depicted with a short beard and wearing an elaborately decorated cuirass with a ruffled collar, set within a beaded inner circle. The portrait is rendered in high relief in the late Renaissance style characteristic of early 17th-century German coinage. The legend encircles the effigy between the inner beaded border and the outer toothed rim, reading GEORG·FRI·D·G·M·BA·ET·HACH·LA·SVCASPO, abbreviating his titles as Margrave of Baden and Hochberg, Landgrave of Sausenberg and Klettgau.

Aanvullende informatie

Baden-Durlach was on the losing side at the Battle of Wimpfen in May 1622, where Margrave George Frederick's forces were routed by a Catholic League army under Tilly and Córdoba. He fled into exile shortly after, and his territories were occupied. This thaler was struck the same year — quite possibly before the defeat in May, making it one of the final issues produced under his direct authority before the margraviate fell under enemy control for the better part of a decade.
