Beschrijving voorzijde Armored bust of Duke George of Brunswick-Lüneburg facing right, wearing elaborately decorated plate armor with a lace collar visible beneath the gorget, and a sword hilt visible at the lower right. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the Germanic Baroque style, with flowing hair and naturalistic facial features. A beaded inner border frames the portrait, with the circumferential Latin legend reading GEORGIUS. D. G. DUX. BRUNS. ET. LUNEB: distributed around the periphery of the coin.

Aanvullende informatie

George of Calenberg issued this thaler during one of the most destructive stretches of the Thirty Years' War, when Imperial and Swedish forces were tearing through Lower Saxony interchangeably. Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg's mint output in 1635–36 coincided almost exactly with the Peace of Prague, which George signed in 1635 — a separate peace that briefly aligned him with the Emperor after years of Protestant coalition politics.

Davenport's ST#6502 designation places this among the standard thaler-weight issues of the Calenberg line, distinct from the broader Brunswick ducal coinage by jurisdiction rather than type. The two-year window reflects either a die run spanning both years or sequential issues under the same administration.
