Obverse description Draped bust of Johann Philipp to right, the head surmounted by two genii holding a laurel wreath above. Below the effigy, three heraldic shields of arms are arranged in a row. The field is devoid of any surrounding legend, giving the portrait a prominent, unencumbered presentation characteristic of early seventeenth-century German memorial coinage.

Reverse description The reverse presents a thirteen-line Latin funerary inscription recording the full ducal titles, birth date (VII Kalends of January, MDXCVII), and death date (Kalends of April, MDCXXXIX) of Johann Philipp, Duke of Saxony. The entire text is contained within an ornately engraved lozenge-shaped (rhombus) cartouche, the four corners of which are elaborately decorated with scrolling acanthus and foliate arabesques in high relief. The surrounding field between the cartouche and the coin's dentilled rim is filled with additional decorative flourishes, emphasizing the memorial character of this issue.
