| Obverse description | Right-facing armored bust of Duke Frederick III of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, depicted with a voluminous curled periwig falling over his shoulders. The duke wears plate armor adorned with an ornate jeweled collar or chain of office across the chest, rendered in fine relief. The portrait is set within a beaded inner border with a milled edge, occupying the full field of the coin. The encircling Latin legend reads FRIDER III GOTHAN SAXON DVX, identifying the ruler as Frederick III, Duke of Gotha-Saxony. The bust is executed in the high-relief baroque style characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century German thaler coinage. |
