Obverse description Hatted bust of Friedrich III (Frederick the Wise) facing right, set within a beaded inner circle. The inner legend carries the duke's Latin title, while the outer marginal legend reads the devotional phrase VERBVM DOMINI MANET IN ÆTERN, interrupted at four points by small shields of arms. The portrait is rendered in the robust early Renaissance style typical of Ernestinian Saxon coinage.
