| 裏面の説明 | Nine lines of German verse inscription filling the field, commemorating the baptism of the ducal child; a large decorative foliate or floral ornament appears above the text, while crossed palm branches flank the date 1692 at the foot of the inscription. The text is carefully laid out in a rectangular arrangement typical of German Baroque commemorative thalers, with each line of verse precisely spaced within the coin's circular border. |

Struck to commemorate the baptism of Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, this piece belongs to a well-established German tradition of Taufthaler — baptismal thalers issued by ruling houses to mark the christening of dynastic heirs. Such coins served simultaneously as gifts to godparents and attendees and as portable proclamations of dynastic continuity. The practice was especially prevalent among the fragmented Saxon duchies, where even minor branches of the Ernestine line maintained their own mints and used commemorative coinage aggressively to assert relevance.
Frederick II would go on to rule Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg from 1691 until his death in 1732.
