Frederick II had seized Silesia from Austria in 1740, and the thalers struck in the early 1750s drew heavily on the silver extracted from Silesian mines — mines that were, constitutionally speaking, still disputed territory. The War of the Austrian Succession had technically ended with the Treaty of Dresden in 1745, but Maria Theresa never reconciled herself to the loss, and the Seven Years' War was already forming on the horizon when this piece left the dies.
