Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg ruled for over half a century, from 1680 until his death in 1732, making him one of the longer-reigning dukes of the Ernestine line. The 1707 issue falls squarely within the War of the Spanish Succession, during which several Thuringian states were drawn into Imperial obligations, supplying troops to the Habsburg cause. Frederick maintained careful fiscal management throughout, and his thaler coinage from this period is notably consistent in execution — the Gotha mint was well-administered by contemporary standards.
Dav ST#2709 distinguishes this issue within a tightly catalogued series. Steguweit's specialist Gotha reference remains the definitive authority for die attribution.
