The Kronenthaler was not a Württemberg invention but an Austrian commercial coin adopted across German states as a trade currency following the disruptions of the Napoleonic wars. Frederick I — elevated from Duke to Elector in 1803 and then to King in 1806 by Napoleon's direct intervention — minted this issue during a period when Württemberg had nearly doubled in territory through French-sponsored redistribution of former Imperial lands. The kingdom was still absorbing those gains administratively and economically when this piece was struck.
The .868 fineness follows the Kronenthaler standard set by the Austrian originals, not Württemberg's own coinage traditions.
