The figure of Saint Christopher is rendered in a robust late Renaissance style, with elaborate drapery and dynamic posture. Frederick I of Württemberg was among the most aggressively self-promoting German princes of the early seventeenth century, and his coinage reflects it. He had pressed Emperor Rudolf II relentlessly for elevation from Count to Duke, finally receiving the title in 1593 — a status upgrade he commemorated in metal at every opportunity over the following decades. The 1607 thaler falls late in his reign; Frederick died in 1608, making issues from this final year comparatively scarce within the type.
