Frederick Francis II ruled Mecklenburg-Schwerin through a period of acute German political realignment — the duchy sided with Austria in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, backing the losing side, and was subsequently absorbed into the North German Confederation under Prussian terms. This 1864 thaler predates that humiliation by two years, struck while the southern German thaler standard still governed coinage across the non-Prussian states.
The Dav GT III#728 attribution places it firmly within the Dresden Mint convention issues, produced to the 30-thaler-per-mark-fine standard established by the Dresden Coinage Convention of 1838.
