Frederick Charles Joseph von Erthal was the last Archbishop-Elector of Mainz to actually govern the city. French Revolutionary forces occupied Mainz in October 1792, were briefly expelled, then retook it permanently in October 1793 — just months before this thaler was struck. Erthal died in February 1802 in exile at Aschaffenburg, having never returned. This coin was minted by an ecclesiastical state that had, in practical terms, already ceased to exist.
