Frederick Casimir ruled Hanau-Lichtenberg from 1641 until his death in 1685, presiding over a county still recovering from the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. The war had gutted the local economy and disrupted silver supplies across the Rhine territories for decades afterward, making large-denomination thalers from this region scarce throughout the mid-to-late seventeenth century. That this piece was struck at all in 1680 reflects a deliberate reassertion of comital monetary authority during a period of gradual fiscal reconstruction.
Hanau-Lichtenberg's mint output under Frederick Casimir was never prolific. The Dav. 6703 attribution places it within a tightly documented series, and the E&L reference — Ehrend & Laverrenz's specialized corpus — confirms it as a cataloged type rather than a mule or emergency issue.
