The KM#1201 thaler presents an immediate problem: Saxon thalers of this period were struck in silver, specifically a .750 fine alloy, as part of the Dresden Convention monetary system. A base metal example at this weight and diameter is almost certainly a contemporary or later copy, a so-called Probemünze trial piece, or a period theatrical token — not a circulation strike. Saxony had no documented authority to issue base metal thalers under the 1838 Dresden Convention standards.
