This thaler commemorates the 1719 Dresden celebrations surrounding the marriage of Frederick Augustus II (Electoral Prince of Saxony) to Maria Josepha, Archduchess of Austria — festivities that Augustus I bankrolled on a scale designed to announce Saxon power to every court in Europe. The Dresden wedding lasted weeks and consumed a sum that historians have compared unfavorably to the state's annual military budget.
