Obverse description Draped bust of Bishop Franz Xaver von Salm-Reifferscheid facing right, rendered in high relief with fine detail to the vestments. A continuous Latin legend encircles the effigy, commencing at approximately seven o'clock, reading the full titular style of the bishop as Prince-Bishop of Gurk and Count of Salm-Reifferscheid. The portrait is executed in the neoclassical style characteristic of late 18th-century German ecclesiastical coinage. The field is smooth and unadorned, focusing attention on the finely detailed bust.

Additional information

Franz Xaver von Auersperg was appointed Bishop of Gurk in 1783 and governed the diocese through the upheavals of the Napoleonic period. This 1801 thaler was struck just years before the Bishopric of Gurk lost its status as an independent ecclesiastical principality — secularization under Napoleonic pressure dissolved the temporal authority of such sees across the German-speaking lands, making issues from these final years effectively terminus coins for their respective mints.

Gurk's output was never prolific. The diocese's minting activity was sporadic at best, and the small series attributed to Auersperg's episcopate represents one of the more obscure corners of Austrian ecclesiastical coinage.
