Franz von Dietrichstein was appointed Bishop of Olomouc in 1599 by Pope Clement VIII and became one of the most powerful figures in the Catholic reconquest of Moravia following the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. He used that authority ruthlessly — expelling Protestant nobles, confiscating estates, and forcing mass re-catholicization across the region. The thalers struck under his authority were not merely ecclesiastical currency; they circulated through a Moravia being systematically remade by his hand.
Dietrichstein held the rank of Cardinal from 1599, making Olomouc one of the few Central European bishoprics issuing coinage under a prince-cardinal during the Thirty Years' War.
