Beschrijving voorzijde Draped and armored bust of Emperor Franz I facing right, wearing a cuirass decorated with elaborate relief work and a lace cravat, his hair styled in long curling locks characteristic of the Baroque period. The imperial titles appear in an abbreviated Latin legend surrounding the effigy, reading from the lower left and continuing around the periphery. The mintmaster's initials appear at the base of the bust truncation. The portrait is boldly rendered in high relief within a finely milled border.

Beschrijving keerzijde Crowned imperial double-headed eagle displayed, with wings spread, each head facing outward, surmounted by a large imperial crown. The breast of the eagle bears an ornate quartered shield displaying the arms of the Habsburg dominions. The legend, reading the devotional motto IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI, is interrupted by the date 1764, and runs around the periphery within a milled border. The overall composition is boldly engraved in the high Baroque heraldic tradition.

Aanvullende informatie

Franz I ruled as Holy Roman Emperor alongside his wife Maria Theresa, who held the hereditary Austrian titles — an arrangement that made him, in practice, a co-regent rather than the dominant authority. This Thaler was struck during the final years of his life; he died suddenly in 1765 at Innsbruck, collapsing after a court theatrical performance. Production of this type ceased immediately upon his death, compressing the striking window to just four years across the Viennese and Hall mints.
