Franz Anton von Harrach governed Salzburg from 1709 until his death in 1727, but his archiepiscopate was defined early by a catastrophic event: the 1712 plague epidemic that swept through the city and surrounding territories, killing a substantial portion of the population. The financial and administrative strain this placed on the see shaped much of the coinage policy of his early reign.
The Zöttl range 2423–2429 reflects at least seven documented die varieties across this issue — not unusual for a decade-long thaler production, but worth noting that minor differences in the ecclesiastical arms arrangement distinguish the earlier strikes from the later ones.
