| 裏面の説明 | Central shield bearing the quartered arms of the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg, surmounted by an ornate princely crown and displayed upon a large heraldic mantle or coat of arms. The legend, commencing at 12 o'clock, gives the abbreviated Latin titles of Ferdinand as Prince of Eichstätt, Passau, and Berchtesgaden. The date appears within or at the base of the legend. The heraldic composition is executed in the formal style of ecclesiastical-territorial coinage of the Holy Roman Empire, with careful rendering of the mantling and shield quarterings. |

Ferdinand III had ruled Tuscany as Grand Duke since 1790, but by 1803 he had been dispossessed of that throne by Napoleon and was effectively a sovereign without a country. Salzburg was granted to him that same year by the terms being negotiated under the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss — the massive reorganization of German ecclesiastical and secular territories that extinguished dozens of ancient jurisdictions. This thaler was struck under that transitional authority, issued from a bishopric that was itself being dissolved as an independent entity even as the coin was being made.
Ferdinand would lose Salzburg too, within three years.
