Ferdinand II's Thaler production from the Vienna mint spans one of the most politically catastrophic decades in Central European history — the heart of the Thirty Years' War, during which the Emperor was simultaneously fighting Protestant leagues, Danish intervention, and Swedish invasion while attempting to impose Catholic uniformity across the Habsburg lands. The 1629 Edict of Restitution, which demanded the return of all church property secularized since 1555, so inflamed the conflict that it effectively prolonged the war by decades.
