Ferdinand II's thalers of 1624–25 were struck while he was consolidating Habsburg authority in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of White Mountain — the 1620 rout that effectively ended Bohemian Protestant resistance and allowed Ferdinand to revoke the Letter of Majesty, the religious charter his predecessor had been pressured into granting. The Vienna mint was working under considerable demand during these years, supplying currency for an imperial administration simultaneously fighting a war and reorganizing confiscated Bohemian estates.
Davenport EC II#3087 places this issue within a tightly grouped sequence of Vienna thalers from the early 1620s, distinguished from Prague and Graz output by mintmaster marks specific to the Vienna facility.
