Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria and Count of Tyrol, governed Upper Alsace as part of his broader Anterior Austrian holdings until his death in 1595. These thalers were struck at the Ensisheim mint across roughly a decade, spanning the tail end of his rule — a period when his court at Ambras was simultaneously one of the most significant Renaissance collecting centers in Europe. Ferdinand's fiscal administration of the Alsatian territories was perpetually strained by the costs of maintaining frontier defenses against both French encroachment and the lingering instability following the religious conflicts of the mid-century.
The MT#571 reference ties this piece to Montenuovo's catalog of Austrian thalers, the authoritative typology for this series. Dates within the 1584–1595 window affect collector interest considerably — 1595 strikes are scarcer, produced only before Ferdinand's death in January of that year.
