Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria and Count of Tyrol, governed the Further Austrian territories — including Upper Alsace — from Innsbruck until his death in 1595. His long administration of these scattered Habsburg holdings in the southwest produced a distinct regional coinage that sat awkwardly between imperial standards and local tradition. The Ensisheim mint, which struck these thalers, was one of the few functioning facilities in the Further Austrian lands and operated under persistent pressure to align output with the 1559 Reichsmünzordnung.
KLEM 186–190 catalogues at least five die marriages within this issue, suggesting sustained production across the full run rather than a single concentrated striking.
