Additional information

Ferdinand of Styria had not yet secured the Bohemian crown when this thaler was struck at Graz — that crisis was still two years away, with the Defenestration of Prague in 1619 triggering the Thirty Years' War. As Archduke of Inner Austria he ruled Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola as a bloc, and Graz served as his primary residence and mint seat. His expulsion of Protestant nobles and clergy from Inner Austria throughout the 1590s and 1600s was among the most aggressive Counter-Reformation campaigns in the Habsburg lands.

Herinek's broad range of Her#54–58 for this type reflects meaningful die variation across the year's output.
