Ferdinand II of Tyrol issued this posthumous thaler in his father's name between 1573 and 1576, a deliberate dynastic statement made nearly three decades after Ferdinand I's death in 1564. The practice of striking coins under a deceased ruler's name was not unusual in Habsburg territories — it reinforced continuity of title and legitimacy at a time when Ferdinand II was consolidating his authority over the County of Tyrol as a distinct Habsburg appanage, separate from the main imperial line.
MT#213 identifies a specific die marriage within the Hall mint production. Hall in Tirol had operated the mechanized rolling mill since the 1560s, making Tyrolean thalers among the technically most consistent of the period.
