Ferdinand Albert II ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel for less than three years before his death in 1735 — the same year this thaler was struck. He had spent much of his adult life as an Imperial field marshal under Habsburg command, distinguishing himself at the siege of Belgrade in 1717, and the principality's coinage reflects an administration that never fully settled into peacetime governance. His death without legitimate male heirs ended his line and triggered the succession that brought the duchy under Carl I.
