| 正面描述 | Draped bust of Ernest August, Bishop of Osnabrück and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, facing slightly to the right, wearing a large flowing allonge wig rendered in fine Baroque style. The effigy is set within an inner beaded border, with the circumferential Latin legend reading ERNESTUS·AUG:D·G·EP:OSN:D·BR·ET LU· occupying the broad outer legend band. The portrait is executed with considerable sculptural relief, typical of the accomplished die-work associated with engraver Heinrich Bonhorst. |

| 背面描述 | Elaborately rendered achievement of arms of Brunswick-Lüneburg, comprising a large quartered shield displaying the heraldic devices of the constituent territories, supported by decorative baroque cartouche mantling. The shield is surmounted by five crested helms with their respective tinctures and ornamental plumes, each bearing identifying crests including an eagle, antlers, and other dynastic devices. The date 1682 appears divided to either side of the helmeted crest grouping, and the engraver's initials H B appear at the lower sides of the shield. The circumferential motto legend SOLA BONA QUAE HONESTA encircles the design, separated by a small star ornament. |

Ernest August became Bishop of Osnabrück in 1661 and ruled Calenberg from 1679, but his real ambition was the Electoral dignity — a campaign he pursued through years of diplomatic maneuvering, military alliance with the Emperor during the Turkish wars, and significant financial outlay. This thaler was struck just as that campaign was gaining momentum; the Electorate of Hanover would finally be conferred in 1692, a decade after this coin's issue.
Welter 1943 distinguishes several die marriages for this type, and the KM#294 attribution covers a modest run rather than a single unified issue.
