Ernest the Pious, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, was unusual among German princes of his generation in having actually survived the Thirty Years' War with his territory largely intact — a consequence of deliberate neutrality and careful administration rather than military success. He ruled for over four decades and became something of a model for Lutheran governance, drawing attention from political theorists across Protestant Europe. This thaler dates to the mature phase of his reign, roughly a decade after the duchy was formally consolidated following the division of the Ernestine lands among his father's heirs in 1640.
Davenport's attribution under ST#7451 places this among the Saxe-Gotha thalers distinguished from the broader Ernestine coinage by ducal title and mint output specific to Gotha.
