Ernest the Pious, who ruled Saxe-Gotha from 1640 until his death in 1675, was unusual among German princes of his generation in that he actually managed his finances responsibly — a genuine rarity in the post-Thirty Years' War scramble to rebuild depleted treasuries. The 1669 date places this thaler roughly midway through a period when Ernest was consolidating the Ernestine territories following the 1672 division he was already anticipating, distributing lands among his seven surviving sons in a plan drawn up years in advance.
Davenport 7449 is well-documented but not common in any grade, as Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg's output was modest compared to the major Saxon mints at Dresden or Leipzig.
