Charles VI was elected Holy Roman Emperor in October 1711, following the sudden death of his elder brother Joseph I from smallpox. Lübeck, like several other imperial free cities, marked the occasion with a thaler issue — a formal gesture of political allegiance as much as a celebratory one. The city had significant motivation: its status as a free imperial city depended entirely on the goodwill of the emperor it was now honoring.
The Behr 191a designation distinguishes this from at least one known die variant of the same type.
