Anhalt-Bernburg was one of the smaller German duchies produced by the repeated subdivision of the Anhalt territories, and by 1859 it was approaching the end of its independent existence — Duke Alexander Karl died without an heir in 1863, and the duchy was absorbed into Anhalt-Dessau. This note was issued by the ducal state ministry itself rather than a bank, which was not unusual for minor German states that lacked the capital or population to sustain a formal note-issuing institution.
The thaler denomination places it squarely in the North German monetary system before the Vereinsthaler reforms fully consolidated regional coinage and paper standards. Survival rate for these minor duchy issues is low — administrative dissolution typically meant systematic redemption and destruction of outstanding notes.
