| Aanvullende informatie |
Frederick Charles Joseph von Erthal was the last Archbishop-Elector of Mainz to actually govern from the city. French Revolutionary forces occupied Mainz in October 1792, were expelled, then returned decisively in late 1793 — by the time this thaler was struck in 1794, Erthal had fled to Aschaffenburg and the electoral capital was gone for good. He died in 1802 still in exile, and the Archbishopric was formally dissolved the following year under Napoleonic reorganization of the German ecclesiastical states.
A coin issued by a prince-bishop already dispossessed of his see.
