Aanvullende informatie

Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony was the last Elector-Archbishop of Trier — and this thaler was struck in the final year he actually controlled his see. French Revolutionary forces occupied Trier in August 1794, ending nearly a millennium of ecclesiastical rule over the electorate. Clemens Wenceslaus fled to Augsburg and never returned, dying in exile in 1812. The archbishopric itself was formally dissolved by the French in 1803.

Coins from 1794 were almost certainly struck before the August occupation, making this among the last issues produced under functioning electoral authority.
