Corvey's abbots held the rank of Imperial Prince, giving them the right to strike thalers — a privilege the abbey exercised sporadically and often in direct tension with its chronic financial difficulties. Christopher of Bellinghausen governed from 1678 to 1696, a period when the Westphalian abbey was still recovering from the devastations of the Thirty Years' War and carrying substantial debts. The Ilisch/Schwede reference catalogues the die pairing precisely as A/a, distinguishing it from the small number of variant combinations known for this emission.
