The Reformation bicentenary of 1717 prompted an extraordinary wave of commemorative thalers across the Lutheran principalities of the Holy Roman Empire — Stolberg-Stolberg among them. Co-issued under joint rule of Christopher Frederick and Jost Christian, this piece reflects the county's firm Protestant identity at a moment when the centenary of 1617 had itself been suppressed in many territories by the Thirty Years' War, making 1717 feel doubly charged.
